Mark Longster

Biography

Mark lives in Knaresborough North Yorkshire with his wife and daughter having moved from his home in Teeside for work when the shipyard he served his apprenticeship in closed down. One of his songs has this as its’ theme, other songs take their inspiration from the sea and coast. It was on the north east coast where Mark’s ancestors lived for hundreds of years till poor fishing and steady work and pay on Teeside drew them away. Mark’s father spent many of his formative summers back in Staithes with his two great aunts and so Staithes held a special place in his heart. The love of this town and the families history as fishermen and a love of the sea was passed on to Mark who also spent many happy times in Staithes and fished regularly on the cobles out of Staithes whenever weather permitted

Mark first started to play guitar and sing in 1991,at which time he played in a duo with Bobbi McGee playing a mixture of folk and country music. Following a period of time with Bobbi, Mark then joined forces with Roger Knowles and Dave Rowinski in The Country Tones playing Guitar , mandolin and singing vocals and backing vocals. Many friends who remember that time recall the lovely harmonies they  managed to achieve all seemingly effortless.

Since that time Mark has sufferred with Kidney failure and music has taken on a pivotal role in his life.

Other bands he has played with include Last Orders., Early Doors, The Davy Young Band, Colleens Fancy and his current bands Copper Kettle and Northern Lights. Mark also plays solo gigs as a singer songwriter interspersing his own songs with classic songs from across the traditions.
